A large landscape wall mirror with a hand-finished black metal frame

A wall mirror does more than reflect a face. The right one fundamentally changes how a room reads — opening up sight lines, doubling natural light, defining the architecture of a wall, and giving the eye a focal point that anchors the rest of the styling around it. The wrong one becomes wallpaper: present but doing none of the work it should. The difference comes down to scale, frame, placement, and the kind of light the mirror has to work with — and on each of those points, the Hamiya is built for the kind of room that wants its mirror to genuinely earn its place.

The Hamiya Wall Mirror is a substantial landscape-format piece, measuring 108 cm wide and 82 cm tall — wider than it is high, with a hand-finished metal frame in a solid black patina. The frame is finished by hand rather than machine, giving it a slightly irregular, considered character that reads as crafted rather than mass-produced. The slim 5 cm wall depth keeps the mirror profile clean against the wall, and the piece arrives ready to hang with no assembly required.

Where a large landscape wall mirror sits best

The 108 cm horizontal proportion is what defines this piece — and the placements that suit it are different from the placements that suit a tall portrait or a circular mirror.

Above a console, sideboard or sofa table. The most natural placement. A landscape mirror that is roughly the same width as the console below it (most consoles run between 100 and 140 cm) creates a unified architectural moment — console below, mirror above, both proportions speaking to each other. The 108 cm width of the Hamiya pairs comfortably with most standard consoles in the Sotran range. Hung roughly 15 to 25 cm above the console surface, the eye reads the two pieces as a single styled vignette.

Above a fireplace mantel. Most South African fireplaces are wider than they are tall, which means landscape mirrors suit mantel placement better than portrait or round options. The 108 × 82 cm proportion fills the typical above-mantel zone without crowding the ceiling or leaving awkward wall space at the sides. The black frame holds its own against the visual weight of the fireplace below — particularly effective with darker stone, brick, or steel surrounds.

Above a bathroom double vanity. Double vanities — increasingly standard in primary bathrooms — typically run 120 to 180 cm wide and call for a mirror that spans both basin areas. The Hamiya’s 108 cm width works well above a 120 cm vanity, providing one substantial mirror for both users rather than two separate smaller mirrors. The black metal frame brings a piece of contemporary character to a bathroom that can otherwise read sterile.

In a bedroom above a low chest or bedroom bench. Above a chest of drawers, a kist or a bedroom bench, the landscape Hamiya creates a styled focal moment that doesn’t compete with the bed itself. The horizontal proportion echoes the line of the bed across the room, building a visually balanced bedroom where the mirror anchors one wall and the bed anchors the other.

In an entryway or hallway as a sight-line piece. Positioned at the far end of an entryway or hall, a substantial mirror catches the sight line as you walk in — extending the visual depth of the space and reflecting whatever is opposite. In small or narrow halls, this is one of the most impactful styling moves available: it makes the space feel meaningfully larger without any structural change.

Why the irregular silhouette and black frame work together

Two design choices on this mirror — the irregular form and the matt black metal frame — do specific work that a standard rectangular mirror cannot.

The irregular silhouette breaks the geometry of a flat wall. A perfect rectangle on a flat wall reads as another rectangle in a room already full of rectangular shapes — windows, doors, frames, furniture. An irregular outline introduces a softer, more organic line that the eye reads as deliberate rather than default. It is the same principle that makes asymmetric arched windows feel more architecturally considered than perfectly square ones.

The black metal frame anchors rather than disappears. A thin or unframed mirror reads as functional — a vanity tool. A substantial black metal frame reads as architectural — a piece of considered design that happens to also reflect. In a styled room, the frame should be visible and intentional, not hidden. The Hamiya’s solid black patina is dense enough to hold the eye on its own while still being neutral enough to pair with almost any surrounding wall colour.

The combination suits modern, industrial and farmhouse schemes equally. Black metal is one of the most flexible material choices in contemporary interiors — it works in industrial, farmhouse, modern, Scandinavian and Japanese-inspired schemes without committing to any single aesthetic. The Hamiya can move comfortably from a contemporary city apartment to a country home without looking out of place in either.

What to pair the Hamiya mirror with

A mirror this substantial defines the wall it lives on, and the surrounding pieces work best when they support rather than compete with it. A few pairings from the Sotran range work particularly well.

On a Sotran console or sideboard. The most natural pairing. Hang the Hamiya above any piece from the Sideboards & Consoles range — the mirror’s 108 cm width fits cleanly above most consoles, and the black frame contrasts beautifully with warm wood or coloured cabinetry. Add a piece from the Pots & Vases range on the console below for a complete styling moment.

With other industrial and black-toned decor. The black frame ties naturally to other pieces in the Industrial Farmhouse tag — black metal lighting, dark-finished furniture, structural pieces. The shared black palette across multiple pieces builds a coherent industrial-leaning room scheme.

With other Black Furniture and Decor pieces. Browse the broader Black Furniture and Decor range to build out the colour palette across the room — black ties consistently from the mirror to other pieces, creating visual through-lines that read as deliberately designed.

Above a bedroom chest or bench. The Hamiya works beautifully above pieces from the Dressers & Drawers, Kist & Trunk, or Bedroom Benches ranges. The contrast of dark metal against natural wood or upholstery creates a focal point that reads as styled rather than functional.

Alongside other lighting and reflective surfaces. Mirrors work hardest when they have light to reflect. Position the Hamiya where it can catch natural light from a window during the day, or pair with pieces from the Lighting range — wall sconces, table lamps or floor lamps positioned nearby — to extend the reflective effect into the evening hours. A well-lit mirror essentially doubles the perceived light in a room.

A note on hanging and installation

The Hamiya arrives ready to hang with no assembly required. For best results, mount the mirror with its centre at roughly 145 to 155 cm from the floor — the standard eye-level for a standing adult — when hanging in an entryway, bedroom or bathroom. Above a console or sideboard, position the bottom of the mirror 15 to 25 cm above the console surface so the two pieces read as a unified arrangement. Above a fireplace mantel, the bottom of the mirror typically sits 10 to 15 cm above the mantel shelf.

For walls that take frequent handling traffic — entryways, bathrooms, frequently used hallways — secure the mirror with appropriate wall fixings rated for the piece’s weight. Drywall installations should use proper drywall anchors or hit a stud where possible. Brick and concrete walls hold mirror weight comfortably with standard masonry fixings. If in any doubt about wall composition or anchoring, a professional installation is the simplest solution.

Caring for a metal-framed mirror

One of the genuine pleasures of a hand-finished metal frame is how easily it stays looking sharp. The black patina is durable and built for years of display — a quick weekly dust with a soft microfibre cloth keeps both the frame and the mirror surface clear. For the mirror itself, a standard glass cleaner applied to the cloth (rather than sprayed directly onto the mirror) lifts fingerprints and dust effortlessly without affecting the frame around it.

For occasional deeper cleaning of the metal frame, wipe with a soft cloth and a small amount of mild soap — the patina holds up beautifully to gentle cleaning. Stick to soft cloths and skip abrasive scourers, which protects the frame’s finish for the long term. The black patina is one of the most low-maintenance frame finishes available — it does not show fingerprints the way polished metal does, and the matt surface keeps its depth without needing periodic re-polishing.

Position the mirror out of consistent direct sunlight to preserve the depth of the black patina over the years. Properly hung and given this minimal care, a hand-finished metal-framed mirror becomes one of those pieces that holds its character for decades — a permanent architectural element of the room rather than a decor accessory that gets replaced.
