Solid Suar wood

FAQ

Is each stool different from the others?
Yes. The piece is hand-carved from a single solid piece of Suar wood, with each unit cut from a different cross-section of the tree. The grain pattern, live-edge profile, two-tone colour distribution, and surface character differ between every stool, with no two pieces identical. This is part of what makes hand-carved Suar furniture distinctive rather than a manufacturing inconsistency.

What is Suar wood and how does it differ from teak or mango wood?
Suar (also called rain tree or monkey pod, botanical name Albizia saman) is a tropical hardwood widely cultivated in Indonesia. It differs from teak or mango wood in showing dramatic two-tone grain patterns, with dark heartwood and lighter sapwood creating distinctive cross-cut character. Suar is comparable to teak in density and durability, with similar moisture resistance from its natural oils, but with more visually pronounced grain that ages into rich tones over decades.

What does "live-edge" mean?
Live-edge construction preserves the natural outer edge of the tree slab rather than machine-cutting a straight perfect edge. The result is a top that follows the tree's natural growth contour, with subtle curves, knot patterns, and natural irregularities that machine-cut alternatives cannot replicate. The live edge is a deliberate design feature signalling authentic wood craft rather than a finishing inconsistency.

Can I sit on it for longer periods?
The 45cm height suits short seated periods (10 to 30 minutes). Without a backrest, sustained seating becomes uncomfortable as it does with any backless stool. The piece works for occasional perching, putting on shoes, styling outfits, or short-stay accent seating. For longer seated comfort, primary lounge seating remains the better choice.

Is it suitable for outdoor or covered patio use?
The stool is designed for indoor use. Suar wood is reasonably moisture-resistant due to its natural oils, but the finish on this piece is positioned for indoor placement. For dedicated outdoor or covered-patio use, an outdoor-rated and outdoor-finished Suar piece would be more appropriate.

What's the warranty?
The piece is covered by Sotran's 3-year warranty on solid wood furniture. Hand-carving variation, live-edge profile differences, natural Suar grain variation, and gradual colour deepening over years are part of how hand-carved solid wood ages and are not warranty defects.
