The Happy Buddha — sometimes called Budai or the Laughing Buddha — is one of the most recognisable decorative icons in the world, and also one of the most misunderstood. Unlike the historical Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama), the Happy Buddha is a later figure drawn from Chinese folklore and Zen tradition, associated with contentment, generosity and the kind of quiet happiness that comes from ease rather than striving. Caring for a cement statue

Cement is a durable, low-maintenance material suited to both indoor and outdoor use. For indoor placement, dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth or a soft-bristle brush — the brush is useful for reaching into any small detail. For outdoor placement, rinse occasionally with clean water to remove dust, pollen and garden debris. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners and pressure washers, which can wear the surface unevenly.

If the statue is left fully exposed to the elements, expect it to weather naturally — darker in places, softer at the edges, occasionally with a little moss or lichen. Many people actively prefer this look on a garden or outdoor piece. If you want to preserve the original, unweathered finish, keep the Buddha under eaves, on a covered patio, or indoors.
