A counter-height bar stool in genuine tan leather with a hand-stitched saddle seat

The bar stool is one of the most consequential furniture decisions in a kitchen or open-plan space. Get it right and the seating becomes a permanent, used-every-day part of the home — somewhere people genuinely sit, eat, work, talk. Get it wrong and the stools become storage pegs for handbags and jackets, looking awkward in photographs of the room. The difference comes down to four practical things: the right height for the counter, the right material for the use, the right silhouette for the surrounding architecture, and the right durability for daily life. The Heston gets all four right — and at a price that doesn’t push genuine leather seating into territory only the upper end of the market reaches.

The Heston Tan Leather Bar Stool is a counter-height piece (75 cm seat height) with a hand-stitched saddle seat in genuine top-grain leather, finished in a warm tan that softens and deepens over years of use. The compact 49 × 36 cm footprint means multiple stools can line up along a kitchen island or breakfast counter without crowding, and the backless silhouette allows the stools to tuck cleanly under an overhanging counter when not in use. The architectural metal-and-leather construction reads as considered and contemporary — equally at home in an industrial, modern farmhouse, mid-century-leaning or contemporary kitchen scheme.

The critical buyer question: counter height vs bar height

Before anything else, the most important thing to know about a bar stool is whether the seat height matches the surface you’re seating people at. South African kitchen counters and bars typically come in three standard heights, and each calls for a different stool height. Get this wrong and the stool is unusable.

Counter height (89–92 cm surface) → 60–65 cm seat stool. Standard kitchen counter height. The Heston at 75 cm is too tall for these.

Counter-island height (95–100 cm surface) → 75 cm seat stool. The most common island and breakfast-counter height in modern South African kitchens. The Heston at 75 cm seat height is exactly the right match for this surface — knees fit comfortably under the counter overhang, elbows rest naturally at counter height, no feeling of stretching up or hunching down.

Bar height (105–110 cm surface) → 80–85 cm seat stool. Dedicated home bars or bar counters. The Heston is too short for these.

If unsure, measure the height of the working surface you’re seating people at, then aim for a stool seat height roughly 25–30 cm lower. The Heston suits the standard 95–100 cm island counter that defines most modern South African kitchens.

The character of genuine top-grain leather

The leather distinction matters more than it might seem. Most “leather” furniture in the South African market is one of three materials, and the differences are meaningful both for cost and for how the piece looks and feels over years of use.

Genuine top-grain leather (this stool). The actual hide of an animal — typically cowhide — with the natural grain layer intact. Premium and durable. Develops a richer, deeper patina with use as the natural oils in skin, the friction of clothing, and the slow oxidation of the leather itself work on the surface. The seat that looks tan when new will look slightly darker and warmer in tone after a year of regular use, and noticeably richer after five years. This is character, not wear — and it is the genuine reason buyers choose real leather over alternatives.

Bonded leather. Leather scraps and fibres glued together with polyurethane and pressed into a sheet. Looks like leather initially but cracks, peels and wears badly within a few years of regular use. Significantly cheaper to produce, and significantly less long-lasting.

PU (polyurethane) leather. A plastic material made to look like leather. Wears reasonably well in light use, doesn’t develop genuine patina, and has a distinctly synthetic surface character. Suitable for low-budget furniture or display pieces; not the same product as genuine leather.

The Heston uses genuine top-grain leather. The price reflects that — but so does the long-term character and durability of the piece.

Why the backless saddle silhouette works

The Heston is deliberately backless rather than featuring an upright back support. This is a design choice, not an oversight. Three things about the backless saddle silhouette are worth understanding.

It tucks under the counter when not in use. Backless stools slide fully under an overhanging counter, leaving a clean visual line and a fully accessible kitchen-island work surface when nobody is sitting. Stools with backs cannot do this — they remain partially visible at all times, breaking up the kitchen architecture. For open-plan kitchens that flow into living spaces, this matters for how the room reads.

The saddle shape provides comfort without a back. The contoured saddle seat (named for its resemblance to a horse saddle) is genuinely comfortable for the typical use case of a kitchen-counter stool — short to medium duration sitting for breakfast, coffee, conversation, working on a laptop. The shape supports the body in the way a flat seat doesn’t.

It is not designed for long sit-down meals. Worth being honest about: backless stools are less comfortable than chairs for extended dinner-party-length sitting. For homes that primarily eat at the kitchen island or counter (rather than at a separate dining table), it may be worth considering whether stools with backs would suit better. For homes that use the counter for shorter eating (breakfast, lunch, snacks) and entertain at a separate dining table, backless stools are usually the right call.

Where a counter-height bar stool sits best

The compact 49 cm width and 75 cm height suit specific placements within a styled home.

At a kitchen island as everyday counter seating. The most natural placement. Position three to four stools along the long edge of a kitchen island, allowing roughly 60 cm of counter space per person. A standard 240 cm island comfortably seats three Heston stools with elbow room to spare; a 300 cm island seats four. The backless design means the stools sit flush against the island when not in use, maintaining the clean architectural line of the kitchen.

At a breakfast bar or peninsula counter. Many modern South African kitchens include a peninsula or breakfast bar — a counter that projects from the wall or another counter, designed specifically for casual seated use. The Heston suits these surfaces particularly well. Position two stools side by side at a standard 120 cm breakfast bar, three at a longer 180 cm peninsula.

At a dedicated home bar area. If your home bar uses counter-height (95–100 cm) rather than full bar-height (105–110 cm) construction, the Heston works as the seating. Position two to four stools at the bar surface for a relaxed entertainment area. Pair with pieces from the broader bar furniture range to complete the scheme.

In a commercial setting — café, restaurant or boutique hotel. The compact footprint, premium leather material and architectural silhouette suit hospitality use particularly well. Counter seating in a café, breakfast bar in a boutique hotel, or counter at a small restaurant — the Heston is designed for use rather than purely for decoration. The genuine leather develops patina under commercial use in the same way as residential, becoming richer over time rather than degrading.

What to pair the Heston with

The warm tan leather and architectural silhouette set up specific pairings across the Sotran range.

With other Bar Furniture pieces for a complete scheme. Browse the broader Bar Furniture range for matching counters, bar tables and wine racks that complete a dedicated bar or counter area. The shared design vocabulary across the range builds a coherent scheme rather than mixed-aesthetic seating.

With other Industrial Farmhouse pieces. The Heston ties naturally to other items in the Industrial Farmhouse tag — pieces that share the warm-natural-meets-architectural aesthetic. Cross-styling with industrial dining tables, raw-timber consoles, or matt-black metal lighting builds a coherent industrial-leaning kitchen and entertainment scheme.

With other Brown and Warm Toned decor. The tan leather sits beautifully with other items from the Brown Furniture & Decor and Warm Toned Furniture & Decor ranges. Cross-styling with warm-toned timber furniture, brown leather accents and earthy textiles pulls the palette through the broader space.

Beneath statement pendant or counter lighting. Counter seating rewards being lit properly. Pair with pieces from the Ceiling Lamps range — pendant lights positioned roughly 75 to 90 cm above the counter surface (so as not to obstruct seated sight lines) make the seating area read as a deliberately styled zone within the broader kitchen.

With kitchen accessories and styling. The seating area becomes a complete moment when paired with a few considered counter-top pieces from the Kitchenalia, Spice Holder, and Pots & Vases ranges. A bowl of fruit, a small vase with seasonal stems, a wooden cutting board — the small things that suggest a kitchen people actually live in.

For a complete dining solution, alongside formal Dining Tables and Chairs. Counter seating works alongside, not instead of, a formal dining setup. Browse the Dining Tables and Dining Chairs ranges for the longer sit-down meals — the Heston handles the casual everyday use, the dining setup handles the entertaining and formal meals.

Caring for genuine leather seating

One of the genuine pleasures of real leather is how easily it stays looking beautiful for years — and how the routine care actively improves the character of the piece over time. The Heston’s top-grain leather is built for years of daily use and only asks for the lightest care to keep it in excellent condition.

Wipe the leather surface weekly with a soft, dry cloth to clear dust and any surface marks. For occasional deeper cleaning, use a barely damp cloth with a small amount of mild soap if needed, then dry immediately with a soft cloth. The natural breathable surface of top-grain leather handles routine cleaning beautifully.

Twice a year, apply a quality leather conditioner with a soft cloth, working in small circular motions and allowing the conditioner to absorb fully before any further use. This nourishes the leather, maintains its suppleness, and deepens the rich tan colour over time. Quality leather conditioners are available at most South African furniture and homewares retailers, or your local saddlery — saddlers know more about leather care than most furniture stores. The same conditioner you would use on a leather couch works on the stool seat.

Position the stools out of consistent direct sunlight to preserve the depth of the tan colour over the years. Spills should be wiped immediately with a soft cloth — most everyday spills (water, coffee, wine) wipe clean from a properly conditioned leather surface without leaving a mark. With this minimal care, genuine leather seating becomes one of those pieces that genuinely improves with age — gaining character and depth that machine-finished alternatives never develop.
