Gargoyles have been part of architectural decoration for longer than most people realise. In medieval Europe, they were carved onto cathedrals and grand buildings with two distinct purposes — to channel rainwater away from the stonework below, and, more symbolically, to stand guard over entrances and rooflines as protective figures. Most domestic gargoyles today serve only the second purpose, but the sculptural tradition is still present in how the piece is read. A gargoyle is not quite ornament. Caring for cast stone

Cast stone is a durable material that suits both indoor and covered outdoor use, and it requires very little maintenance. For indoor placement, dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth or a soft-bristle brush — the latter is useful for reaching into the carved detail. For outdoor placement, rinse occasionally with clean water to remove dust, pollen or garden debris. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, pressure washers or abrasive tools, which can strip the finish or damage the hand-carved detail.

If left fully exposed to the elements, cast stone will gradually weather — developing moss, darker patches and a softer patina over time. Many people actively prefer this look, and it is part of how a gargoyle of this tradition is meant to age.
